Majid Majidi’s ‘Midday Meal’ Wins Busan Best Film Award
Iranian director Majid Majidi’s Midday Meal received the Best Film Award at the closing of the Busan International Film Festival. The victory also qualifies the film for submission to the Oscars’ Best International Feature category.
What Is Midday Meal About?
Set in a drought-stricken village surrounded by barren terrain, Midday Meal follows a teacher fighting to keep his school open. Mohammad Rahimi plays the educator, whose efforts become increasingly difficult after the death of a benefactor who supported the school.
The struggle to preserve the school forms the central conflict of Majidi’s film, placing a teacher’s commitment to education against the challenges facing his community.
Busan Win Opens a Path to Oscar Consideration
The Best Film Award brings Midday Meal festival recognition and eligibility for submission to the Academy’s international feature category. Qualification is a step toward consideration; it does not mean the film has received an Oscar nomination.
Majid Majidi Makes His First Busan Visit
Majidi attended Busan for the first time to present Midday Meal. Known internationally for films including Children of Heaven, the Iranian filmmaker concluded his debut visit with the festival’s Best Film honour.
